Mission Control… This is SpaceX Crew Dragon

Wow… it was absolutely incredible to witness the first manned mission from SpaceX Crew Dragon on May 30. While watching the countdown, and seeing the astronauts preparing for launch, I thought about all the preparation that went into making this possible — of course, then UX popped into my mind and I had a million questions. The space suits — how have they been improved and what was the research process like? When operating in a zero gravity environment, what are all the factors considered when supporting user behaviors?

Then I started thinking about isolation and wondered how designers might approach creating a safe environment that is pleasant to live in — both from a mental and physical perspective. So many interactions, and I’m assuming so many iterations to the process. Needless to say, it’s inspiring and I can’t wait to see the partnership between SpaceX and NASA to continue to grow!

To the local Pittsburgh community, the NASA Glenn Research Center (Cleveland, OH) is conducting facility tours. Although some tours have been cancelled due to covid-19, you can still tune in for select virtual tours!
